It’s always a treat annually to see what Pantone selects as the Color of the Year. Their choice deeply influences fashion, beauty, home decor, design, and other industry trends.

Pantone is the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries. This past December, they announced that the 2013 Color of the Year was Pantone 17-5641 Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green. In Pantone’s words, it is “a color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance, and harmony.”

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®, explained its attraction to them this way:

“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum. As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors.”

Other terms that come to mind when I think about Emerald are luxuriousness, regeneration, growth, harmony, freshness, and sophistication. How about you?

I’ve seen Emerald, appropriate for all four seasons, steadily rising in usage in the fashion industry for the past several seasons.
